Market overview
Halloween creates real extra sales
Carnival revelry is unpredictable, which unfortunately also applies to a large share of the markets reflected by this product group. Hardly any firm figures are available from market research or statistics.
One exception to this situation is the German market for all articles purchased for the Halloween celebrations. The German Association of the Toy Industry (DVSI) has compiled impressive figures that show an interesting dynamic for this segment.
According to the DVSI Carnival Group, the German suppliers of costumes and other carnival articles turned over some 28 million euros for Halloween in 2008 (20 million euros in 2007). This growth of 40 per cent clearly indicates the great popularity. However, this will ultimately not impact on the group’s carnival turnover in full, as many costumes and other accessories are also used in the carnival season.
The industry would be a good deal poorer without Halloween, however. Although the growing sales and public interest do not mean that product quantities increase to the same extent, quality and choice have continued to improve overall. This is particularly reflected by adults’ costumes and accessories, which have contributed a lot to the increased sales. For example, the shops sold 192,000 adults’ costumes (2007: 191,300), 128,000 children’s costumes (115,100), 138,000 wigs (80,700), 273,000 hats (251,000), 790,000 make-up sets (814,000) and 4,500,000 accessories (3,943,000) for Halloween in 2008.
